Patient Choices Vermont (PCV) is the organization that led the initiative to adopt a death with dignity law in Vermont.  With the enactment of Act 39 on May 20, 2013, Vermont became the first state in the country to adopt a death with dignity statute through legislative action.

Act 39 provides
carefully regulated personal choice that allows compassionate relief from suffering when death is near.  This law ushered in a new era in which individuals facing difficult and highly personal decisions about their care are fully in charge of their end-of-life choices.

Today, Patient Choices Vermont is dedicated to continued advocacy work, educating Vermonters and the state's health care providers about end-of-life choices and ensuring that all Vermonters have access to the rights established by the law.

People from all over Vermont write frequently to thank PCV for working to get Act 39 in place.  One Vermonter wrote:

"Because of your efforts, we can all be grateful and rest knowing that when we face end-of-life decisions, there are compassionate choices.  Thank you."
