2024 Fall Fundraising Letter - Investing in our Future Right to Choose
Dear Friends:
When my father was dying and had decided to use medical aid in dying, he told us, “Next Friday is the day.” By setting this date, he created a space for friends and family to pour out their love and appreciation. It was a time to share feelings deeply and without pretense that there might be another chance for final farewells. Dad was still very much himself. Day after day he was able to take calls and see visitors, to listen, laugh, share tears and offer words of wisdom. He told me that in his last week he had some of the most meaningful conversations of his life.
PCV works hard to empower people to have a chance to decide not just the duration, but the emotional landscape of their departing days. This blossoming of choice can flip the script of life’s final act. Dad’s illness continued to progress as that week went on. But rather than experiencing that week as the prelude to an ever more painful and disorienting struggle, his choice allowed him to depart his life in the warm wake of days filled with love and connection.

Empowering people at the end of life is a long-term mission.
PCV spearheads Vermont’s work to evolve medical aid in dying practices and policies. We are the authoritative source for new medical providers who want guidance on how to help their patients navigate end-of-life decisions. Our work has ripple effects across our communities as end-of-life conversations become more prevalent and accepted.
The Numbers Speak Volumes: The need for our expertise and services has more than tripled over the past few years while our budget and staffing have barely increased.
A Critical Juncture: PCV is at critical juncture where we must increase our human and financial resources to meet the growing demand for our services.
Thousands of people rely on PCV!
People rely on us to educate the public, provide clear, easily accessible best practice information to clinicians, guide policy related to end of life choice and much more.
Please join donors like these to ensure that PCV will be here for the long term.
“I have been a long-term donor to Patient Choices Vermont because I deeply value the mission of enabling people to have control over our own bodies. By establishing both the legal framework and the clear and consistent information backbone for aid in dying in Vermont, PCV helps medical professionals act on their natural compassion.” ~~Laura Carlsmith
“PCV’s work is central to the mission of weaving aid in dying into the fabric of end-of-life care in Vermont. Let's keep Act 39 safe and strong. When quality of life, dignity, comfort and more become a struggle, we should all have choices.” ~~Katy Lesser

Our budget is almost entirely supported by people like you.
Your support helps:
- Expand the number of experienced medical providers.
- Promote best practices with tools and resources for patients, families and medical professionals.
- Nurture and grow the networks of people who provide compassionate support to patients and families.
Every one of us will enter that deeply vulnerable time when we are approaching the end of our lives and will want accurate and complete information and the freedom to exercise personal autonomy, whether we choose medical aid in dying or not.
Together, let’s make sure that everyone has access to that choice.
With appreciation,
Betsy J. Walkerman, Esq.
