We recently had the privilege of supporting our neighbors in New Hampshire when attending the NH House Judiciary Committee hearing on the New Hampshire End of Life Freedom Act, HB254. Patient Choices Vermont (PCV) President Betsy Walkerman and former Vermont Lieutenant Governor David Zuckerman joined hundreds of others in providing oral and written testimony in support of this bi-partisan bill. It is time for our neighbors to have legal access to the full range of end-of-life options in their own state so that they may be able to choose a peaceful death surrounded by their loved ones in the place they call home. Seeing this legislative process in action and hearing from supporters, as well as many opposed to medical aid in dying, impressed upon me two things. First; there is much misunderstanding, misinformation and fear regarding medical aid in dying that we must continue to educate on. And second; it is critical that Patient Choices Vermont remain diligent stewards of Act 39. Together, we must do all we can to ensure that medical aid in dying is never misused.
We are proud to provide information and reassurance that there has never been a single complaint since the first Vermont first enacted Act 39 in 2013, and that the laws are carefully written to honor life and protect it from any form of abuse or coercion. Patient Choices Vermont remains grateful for your support and engagement to ensure that we can continue to provide accurate, data driven information to counter the fear and misunderstanding of medical aid in dying. What’s next for New Hampshire? We will continue to work closely with the New Hampshire Alliance for End of Life Options and other advocates in New Hampshire sharing our experience and expertise in making medical aid in dying an option they can proudly enact in their state. Our two states share many components of our regional medical system, so enactment of this legislation in Vermont directly benefits Vermonters as well. We remain grateful for your ongoing support, Comments are closed.
