PCV Community and Medical Education Events

We provide educational events and workshops for community groups, hospice organizations, doctors, nurses, and students. Here are a few past examples:
  • UVM Home Health and Hospice:  Update and training session by Dr. Jaina Clough
  • Grand Rounds:  Training for doctors at UVM Medical Center, Brattleboro Hospital and other institutions by Dr. Diana Barnard.
  • Montpelier Senior Activity Center: Day-long workshop chaired by Betsy Walkerman, PCV President, with speakers including Dr. Jonna Goulding and Cindy Bruzzese, Vermont Ethics Network.
  • Waterbury Rotary Club:  Community presentation and discussion by Toni Kaeding, MS RN
  • Bayada Hospice: Update and training by Toni Kaeding, MS RN
  • Dana Medical Library at UVM Larner College of Medicine: Medical Aid in Dying display and panel presentation to medical practitioners and students, chaired by Dr. Jana Clough with speakers including Dr. James Boyd, Dr. Timothy Lahey and Peggy Stevens.
PCV will present events at churches, libraries, conferences, colleges, high schools, law firms, and more. All sessions are free, although honoraria for PCV are welcome when appropriate.

Sessions are available by Zoom or in person.

PCV provides opportunities to ask questions, learn, and share stories that are life affirming and empowering...
Here are some of the topics typically discussed in PCV educational sessions:
  • Medical Aid in Dying:  Who qualifies and who does not.
  • Personal Stories: From family members of people who chose medical aid in dying.
  • Act 39 Process: How the request process works.
  • Conversations:  How to talk to your doctor.  For medical personnel, how to be prepared to discuss aid in dying with patients. 
  • Medications & Clinical Considerations: Especially for doctors and nurses.
  • Advance Directives:  How advance directives relate to medical aid in dying or cover situations beyond medical aid in dying.
These conversations are life affirming and empowering.  People often discuss their experiences with the dying process of loved ones and express their desires for what they would or would not like when they consider their end-of-life choices.
